A wildly funny, wonderfully gothic introduction to Shakespeare, chamber music and audience-powered theatrical chaos.

What happens when you take a string quartet, add it to a production of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, then hand the story over to Heccatty the chief witch? You get Dame Heccatty Weirdsister and the Instruments of Darkness do Macbeth: a gloriously bonkers live music and theatre show where the audience helps create a cast to make the RSC proud.

This beginner-friendly guide to Shakespeare’s Macbeth told from Heccatty’s perspective along with her ‘Instruments of Darkness’- the Mavron string quartet- blends the spirit of the Edinburgh Fringe with clever comedy, classical music and just the right amount of gothic mischief.

Funny, smart and brilliantly theatrical, it is the perfect night out for curious first-timers, Shakespeare fans, music lovers and anyone ready to embrace their inner goth.

Written and directed by the wonderful Martin Riley, this production has all the wit, theatrical mischief and storytelling spark needed to make Shakespeare feel fresh, funny and completely alive.

Led by the amazing Helen Woods, the show promises a performance full of warmth, energy and musical brilliance — drawing the audience into the action and making every moment feel gloriously unexpected.

Assisted by The Mavron Quartet who bring their acclaimed musicianship, theatrical flair and passion for sharing chamber music to the heart of the show. Founded by Christiana Mavron, the quartet has built a strong reputation for imaginative performances, creative collaborations and inspiring work with audiences of all ages — making them the perfect “Instruments of Darkness” for Heccatty’s mischievous journey through Macbeth.
